She put neonatal survival on the global health agenda
Professor Joy Elizabeth Lawn from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is one of the world’s leading researchers on the health of mothers, newborns and children. The Faculty of Health Sciences is now awarding her an honorary doctorate in connection with Aarhus University’s Annual Celebration.
How can we prevent deaths among some of the world’s most vulnerable newborns? That question has been at the core of Joy Elizabeth Lawn’s research for decades.
The faculty’s honorary doctor has helped to establish the evidence base now used around the world to prevent stillbirths, premature births and neonatal mortality. Her research has been instrumental in the development of international health programmes and policy initiatives.
Joy Elizabeth Lawn has combined clinical experience from Africa with research at the highest international level. She has played a central role in global initiatives and research series such as the Lancet Small Vulnerable Newborn Series and Every Newborn Action Plan. This work contributed to the inclusion of neonatal survival in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a specific target. She is also among the most cited researchers in her field.
The new honorary doctor has collaborated with researchers at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University on research into children’s and women’s health for many years. This collaboration has resulted in publications in leading international journals and strong international research networks.
