Sharon Lewin is Health's new honorary doctor
Professor Sharon Lewin, a researcher in infectious diseases, has been appointed as the new honorary doctor at Health, where she will help strengthen the ties between Aarhus University and the latest international research.
Honorary doctorates are awarded at Aarhus University's annual celebration to researchers from other institutions with whom the university has close collaborations in research, teaching, and professional networks.
As the Director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne in Australia, Sharon Lewin leads 900 researchers and clinicians working on the prevention, treatment, and cure of infectious diseases such as HIV.
Sharon Lewin's nearly 25-year collaboration with Health and the Department of Infectious Diseases at Aarhus University Hospital has resulted in 36 joint scientific publications and several ongoing clinical trials and research exchanges over the years.
Sharon Lewin also played a crucial role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including being part of the team that first isolated the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This effort helped over 35 laboratories worldwide develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to combat COVID-19 early in the pandemic.
In HIV research, Sharon Lewin is known for developing a global scientific strategy for a cure for HIV. She is also the President of the International AIDS Society, which has more than 17,000 members worldwide.
