The Greek word endodontics means "inside the tooth", and the research field includes diagnosis and prevention of infection of the tooth nerve and the surrounding tissue. It is a field in which the newly appointed Professor Lise-Lotte Kirkevang has extensive experience. She researches into the incidence of infection of the tooth nerve and the tissue around the tip of the tooth root, as well as the prognosis for teeth following root-canal treatment and the diagnostic methods necessary to make an accurate diagnosis and start treatment at the correct time.

"A central element in my research has always been making improvements for patients. We expect that endodontic diseases will come to constitute a relatively large proportion of dentists' work, and that treatment will be more complex – especially because more elderly people will be retaining their natural teeth, possibly increasing the risk of dental diseases, and because patients will also receive treatment for more than one chronic disease," says Lise-Lotte Kirkevang and she continues:

“Therefore, research is important for treatment and to increase our knowledge about the relationship between general disease and the incidence and treatment of endodontic disease".

Lise-Lotte Kirkevang graduated as a dentist from Aarhus University in 1995 and she took up the position of professor on 1 August 2023.
