New honorary professor strengthens the treatment of older patients
The German specialist in geriatrics, Michael Denkinger, has been appointed honorary professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. In this role, he will strengthen research into how we can prevent complications and maintain mobility in older patients.
Over a number of years, Michael Denkinger has conducted research into how older patients can preserve their mobility, independence and quality of life by preventing falls, optimising medication, and identifying frailty at an early stage.
His research is based on older people’s biological age (body age) rather than their chronological age. He combines clinical studies with the use of digital solutions and long-term measurements of physical activity.
“We want to become better at preventing complications in older patients while at the same time supporting them in remaining mobile and independent, including during and after hospital admission. The honorary professorship provides an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between clinical practice, research and education across national borders,” says Michael Denkinger.
As an honorary professor, he contributes to research at Aarhus University and will also extend his teaching from Ulm University Hospital in southern Germany to Aarhus.
Michael Denkinger’s work is relevant to patients, the healthcare system and decision-makers alike, who are facing a rapidly growing older population and an increasing need for evidence-based solutions in elderly care.
In his daily work, Michael Denkinger is Chief Physician and Medical Director at Agaplesion Bethesda Clinic in Ulm, as well as Head of the Institute of Geriatric Research at Ulm University Hospital.
