New clinical professor of gynaecology joins Health

Consultant Anne Hammer from the Department of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Gødstrup Regional Hospital takes on her new professorship at Aarhus University on 1 July 2024. She conducts research into HPV-related diseases and is particularly concerned with improving the diagnosis and treatment of women with cervical cell changes.

The focal point of Anne Hammer’s research is the human papillomavirus (HPV), and she uses different research methods to shed light on clinical issues associated with HPV-related diseases.

Her register-based research adds to the knowledge about the risks associated with different forms of treatment, while her clinical research explores whether new methods of diagnosis or treatment are better than existing ones. Moreover, she uses translational research to examine whether biomarkers can be used to identify the women who are at the highest risk of developing or having cervical cancer or its precursors. This will enable targeted treatment.

"My research is particularly important for the many women who receive an abnormal swab-test result and also for the women whose tests show that they are in the early stages of cervical cancer. HPV virus can also cause cancer in men, so my research is also important for them," says Anne Hammer.

She sees the professorship as a seal of approval for the research conducted by her and her research group, and says that as a clinical professor she can initiate even more research projects aimed at better diagnostics and treatment. One of the upcoming research projects will investigate why some people with HPV develop cancer while others do not.

Anne Hammer's professorship is a shared position financed by Aarhus University, Gødstrup Regional Hospital and Central Denmark Region.
