Annual meeting: The Cardiovascular Network focuses on elderly and frail patients

On October 28, 2024, the Cardiovascular Network at Health invites leading researchers, clinicians, and decision-makers in cardiovascular research and treatment to its annual meeting. This year's meeting will particularly focus on the treatment of elderly and frail patients.

A session dedicated to cardiovascular treatment for elderly and frail patients will open the annual meeting of the Cardiovascular Network. This is an area that is receiving increasing attention as the population ages and more people live longer with chronic cardiovascular diseases.

"It is crucial that we improve our ability to tailor treatments to the growing group of elderly patients, who often have multiple concurrent illnesses," says Professor Jens Cosedis Nielsen, chair of the Cardiovascular Network.

Participants at the annual meeting will also have the opportunity to hear a presentation by Associate Professor Catherine Hauerslev Foss on the advantages and challenges of frailty assessments.

"Frailty assessments can help tailor treatments for the most vulnerable patients, but there is also a risk that these assessments could hinder the right treatment if not used correctly," says Professor Thomas Maribo, who, along with Christina S. Nielsen, will moderate the session on frailty.

Professor Jens Cosedis Nielsen, chair of the Cardiovascular Network, looks forward to a day where such issues are discussed openly and honestly:

"We are in the midst of a demographic wave where more and more elderly people live with chronic cardiovascular diseases, often alongside other chronic conditions. This challenges us to think innovatively and to become even better at individualizing our treatments for each patient."

Flash talks and posters: encouraging young researchers to participate

One of the central goals of the annual meeting is to support future researchers. Therefore, Professor Emma Börgeson, deputy chair of the Cardiovascular Network, particularly encourages Ph.D. students and postdocs to attend the annual meeting and, above all, to submit abstracts for flash talks and posters:

"The annual meeting is a fantastic opportunity to present your research to a broader audience and receive valuable feedback from experienced researchers. We hope to see many exciting contributions from the next generation of cardiovascular researchers."

The best contributions will be recognized with awards during the annual meeting, aiming to provide young researchers with a valuable opportunity to present their work and network with experienced colleagues. The deadline for abstracts is already September 16.

A diverse program with national and international speakers

The program also offers a wide range of topics in cardiovascular research. The day's second session delves into the latest insights in muscle physiology and metabolism in cardiovascular diseases.

Participants at the annual meeting can look forward to a keynote presentation by Professor Matthew Stroud from Kings College London on the role of the nuclear membrane in cardiovascular development and disease.

Additionally, Professor Lars Gormsen from the Department of Clinical Medicine will present the latest research in PET imaging of cardiac metabolism, which could revolutionize our understanding of disease development and treatment.

The day will conclude with a reception, offering ample opportunities to network with colleagues and discuss research ideas and potential collaborations over a glass of wine. Breaks throughout the day are also dedicated to networking and poster presentations.
