Two researchers from the Faculty of Health Sciences have received major grants from the Danish Heart Foundation for projects that, in different ways, aim to improve life with heart disease and the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Professor Thomas Maribo from the Department of Public Health and DEFACTUM, Central Denmark Region, has received DKK 4,372,359 for the project “Person-centred cardiac rehabilitation”.

Up to one in three heart patients experiences poor mental wellbeing, and in the project Thomas Maribo and his colleagues will develop and test new methods for integrating mental health support as a regular part of cardiac rehabilitation. The aim is to strengthen the wellbeing of both patients and relatives and create better conditions for life with and after heart disease.

Professor Morten Schmidt from the Department of Clinical Medicine and Regional Hospital Gødstrup has received DKK 4,000,000 for the project “Best anaesthetic method for cardioversion treatment (CARDIOZOLAM)”.

In the project, Morten Schmidt and his colleagues will examine whether patients with atrial fibrillation can have a more effective and gentler treatment pathway by combining cardiac imaging and cardioversion treatment under a single anaesthetic. The aim is to improve the patient pathway while also contributing to better use of healthcare resources.

In 2026, the Danish Heart Foundation has awarded funding to a total of seven research projects that will contribute to better prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in the field of heart disease.
