Niels Jessen honored for groundbreaking diabetes research
Clinical professor and head of research Niels Jessen from Aarhus University and Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus is awarded the Bagger-Sørensen Prize 2024 for his research in type 2 diabetes, which has transformed the understanding of the disease's complexity and introduced new treatment perspectives.
For over 25 years, Niels Jessen has studied the causes of type 2 diabetes and the mechanisms behind some of the most effective treatments. His work has shed light on the effects of physical activity, fasting, dietary supplements, and antidiabetic medications in patients with type 2 diabetes. Now, he receives the Bagger-Sørensen Prize, amounting to one million Danish kroner, for his contributions.
"Receiving the Bagger-Sørensen Prize and the recognition from colleagues is a great honor. Professionally, it serves as tangible proof that numerous individual research results have shaped a broader understanding that has shifted our perception of a complex disease and pointed to new treatment perspectives," says Niels Jessen, adding:
"The prize is a significant recognition of the research environment here in Aarhus, where I was trained and now lead a center with truly unique opportunities for world-class research in diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases."
The Bagger-Sørensen Prize is awarded annually to an active researcher in recognition of elite research efforts at the highest international level.
