For several years, Lars Rolighed has conducted research into thyroid and parathyroid disorders, with an emphasis on diagnosis, treatment, and the consequences of treatment. The parathyroid glands are located next to the thyroid at the front of the neck, and even small hormonal changes can have significant effects on patients' quality of life.

According to Lars Rolighed, there is a need for highly individualised treatment and ongoing research in the field to ensure the best possible care for each patient.

“The professorship is a recognition of many years of work with these patients and conditions. I hope it will help raise awareness, improve treatments, and support further research for the benefit of future patients,” says Lars Rolighed.

The new Clinical Professor is leading studies into whether fluorescent light can improve outcomes of neck cancer surgeries and whether small thyroid cancer nodules can be treated with heat. Several of these projects are conducted as randomised trials involving patients referred to the department.

The aim is to improve treatment outcomes for future patients with glandular conditions in the neck, both nationally and internationally.
