New professor strengthens the treatment of complex bone disorders
The 43-year-old orthopaedic surgeon Jan Duedal Rölfing has been appointed Clinical Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. Here, he conducts research in orthopaedic reconstruction with a focus on deformities, limb length discrepancies, and impaired bone healing.
For a number of years, Jan Duedal Rölfing has carried out research into the treatment of both common fractures and more complex orthopaedic conditions such as deformities of the arms and legs, limb length discrepancies, and bones that fail to heal spontaneously. These are conditions that can have a major impact on patients’ physical function and quality of life, regardless of age.
“My goal is to generate the necessary evidence so that we can offer the best possible treatment to patients with complex bone disorders. The professorship is the culmination of many years of focused research alongside my full-time clinical position. The appointment allows me to devote more time to research and to expand collaboration with both Danish and international colleagues,” says Jan Duedal Rölfing.
The new Clinical Professor is involved in several national and international research projects, including studies on complications associated with reconstructive techniques, correction of deformities using motorised intramedullary nails, and the use of external ring fixators in severe fractures. In addition, WISE-DK, a nationwide project on rehabilitation after wrist fractures, will be launched in 2026.
Alongside his clinical research, Jan Duedal Rölfing works as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Aarhus University Hospital and is engaged in medical education research, where he investigates how students and junior doctors develop surgical competencies in safe learning environments. He also organises and delivers workshops for experts from around the world to exchange experience in advanced reconstructive treatments.
