New professor: Simulations prepare healthcare professionals for critical situations
Gabriel Reedy is a new professor of simulation at the Department of Clinical Medicine. His research focuses on how improved training can prepare healthcare professionals for both routine tasks and critical situations.
The new professor, Gabriel Reedy, aims to develop the way doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are trained. Through realistic simulations, they can practise procedures that they rarely perform but must be able to carry out safely. They can also practise working with colleagues from other professional groups without putting patients at risk.
“Healthcare professionals must be prepared for both routine tasks and the rare situations in which it is crucial to act correctly under pressure. My goal is to create more targeted learning programmes so that they feel confident and well prepared when patients need them,” says Gabriel Reedy.
Every year, several thousand healthcare professionals from across the Central Denmark Region take part in training at the MidtSim simulation centre. Here, they practise rare procedures, interprofessional collaboration and skills used in the day-to-day treatment of patients.
Gabriel Reedy hopes that research into simulation-based training can improve the education and continuing professional development of healthcare professionals, thereby benefiting both patients and their relatives.
The professorship is a collaboration between Aarhus University and the Central Denmark Region.
