New Professor aims to improve the treatment of heart disease

Morten Schmidt investigates how heart diseases develop, are detected, and treated - both through large-scale registry studies and randomized clinical trials. His research spans a broad spectrum: from analyzing the side effects and efficacy of heart medications to implementing specific interventions that can improve patient outcomes or reduce healthcare costs by optimizing workflows within the healthcare system.

“We are, among other things, working to uncover side effects of painkillers and blood thinners, as well as to enhance randomized clinical trials by integrating them with the use of Danish health registers,” he explains.

Currently, he and his research team are preparing several major randomized trials in the Central Denmark Region. Their focus includes improved treatment for atrial fibrillation and pulmonary embolism - two common and serious heart conditions.

“This professorship provides better conditions for taking our research to new heights, while I maintain my clinical grounding and continue to see patients. It’s important to me that clinical practice and research go hand in hand,” he says.

The professorship is jointly held by the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and the Department of Cardiology at Gødstrup Regional Hospital. The appointment is also supported by the Health Science Research Fund of the Central Denmark Region.
