Penile cancer is a rare but serious type of cancer, with only 60-80 new cases annually in Denmark. The disease requires surgical treatment. In his research, Jakob Kristian Jakobsen has closely examined how penile cancer spreads to other parts of the body, including lymph nodes in the groin. Additionally, he has investigated the early stages of penile cancer.

"My research mainly aims to explore whether there are specific health and lifestyle factors that improve the chances of successfully managing a case of penile cancer. I also study how the diagnosis affects patients' quality of life and sexuality," says Jakob Kristian Jakobsen.

The new doctor in health has a long career behind him and has gained significant expertise in his field, including as a Fulbright researcher at Yale University and later as a chief physician and team leader with special responsibility for the treatment of penile cancer at Aarhus University Hospital.

"Penile cancer can be linked to the virus known as HPV. Discoveries made in the field of penile cancer have the potential to impact other individuals suffering from HPV-related diseases. This could make a huge difference, as HPV plays a role in many types of cancer, including head and neck cancers, cervical cancer, and other cancers affecting the external genitalia," explains Jakob Kristian Jakobsen.
