New clinical professor to strengthen research in digital health innovation
Morten Haaning Charles has been appointed clinical professor in health innovation focused on people with chronic conditions at Aarhus University's Department of Clinical Medicine and Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus.
Clinical Professor Morten Haaning Charles will conduct research into digital health innovation and integrated care for people with chronic illnesses, particularly type 2 diabetes. He will develop and test digital solutions such as decision support systems and sensor technologies that can share data across sectors and improve the connection between clinical practice and research.
"I am working to create more cohesive care for chronic conditions. We need to move knowledge, not patients, and develop a more proactive, personalised, and holistic approach to treatment. Through collaboration between general practice, hospitals, municipalities, and international partners, I aim to strengthen data-driven and patient-centred healthcare both in Denmark and internationally," he says.
Morten Haaning Charles is involved in several research projects, including an AI-based decision support system for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in general practice and the Screen Smart project, which aims to optimise eye and foot examinations using risk-based algorithms.
As clinical professor, he will also contribute to teaching at Aarhus University. Here, he will draw on his experience from research projects to provide students and healthcare professionals in postgraduate and continuing education with insight into how digital innovation can enhance cross-sector collaboration and lay the foundation for future patient care.
