New clinical professor strengthens research into intestinal diseases

Katrine Emmertsen has been involved in gastrointestinal surgery research since her medical studies, and her work has particularly contributed to the understanding of the late effects that many patients experience after treatment for colorectal cancer. In recent years, she has expanded her research area to include diverticular disease (a condition where pouches form in the wall of the colon) and other common but less well-studied bowel disorders.

“The professorship gives me the opportunity to expand research into common bowel diseases that many people live with. It’s an important field that has historically received limited attention, and I look forward to developing new projects in collaboration with colleagues in Randers and across the region and country,” says Katrine Emmertsen.

Katrine Emmertsen is involved in several research projects and is part of the steering group for a major research unit investigating long-term effects following treatment of pelvic organ cancers. She also leads a growing research group conducting local, national, and international studies on diverticular disease.

After several years with limited time for teaching, Katrine Emmertsen looks forward to taking on more teaching responsibilities in her new role as professor. She is responsible for the clinical placements of medical students in Randers and teaches both medical students and other healthcare professionals.
