New clinical professor aims to improve treatment for children with lung diseases
Sune Leisgaard Mørck Rubak has been appointed clinical professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. His research focuses on how improved diagnostics and treatment can help children with severe, chronic and rare lung diseases live better lives.
Sune Leisgaard Mørck Rubak conducts research into paediatric lung diseases, with a particular focus on children with rare and chronic lung diseases as well as congenital lung malformations. His research is not only concerned with the diseases themselves, but also with creating the best possible care pathways for the children and their parents through collaboration across sectors, regions and departments.
At the Danish Center of Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergology at Aarhus University Hospital, Sune Leisgaard Mørck Rubak and his team are working to improve patient pathways - from diagnosis through to subsequent treatment.
‘In our research team, our ambition and goal are to help children with rare and chronic lung diseases achieve the best possible lung function and, as a result, have the best possible conditions for taking part in play and school life. Although there are often few patients within each individual diagnosis, collectively these diseases affect many children - both in Denmark and internationally,’ says Sune Leisgaard Mørck Rubak.
The new clinical professor is involved, among other things, in the OCT Air study, in which researchers are investigating whether the imaging method Optical Coherence Tomography could become a new standard for diagnosing and treating narrowing and damage in children’s airways. He is also involved in the INSPIRE CHILD study, which examines the relationship between children’s microbiome, immune system and chronic lung diseases.
Sune Leisgaard Mørck Rubak is a consultant at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Aarhus University Hospital and heads the Danish Center of Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergology. The professorship is supported by Familien Andresens Selskab til Fremme af Medicinsk Forskning (the Andresen Family Society for the Advancement of Medical Research) and Børnelungefonden (the Danish Paediatric Pulmonology Foundation).
