During her studies, Maria Lorentsen has focused particularly on the link between diet and cancer. She has, among other things, written her bachelor’s project on the subject and participated in the Nordic Summer School in cancer epidemiology.

With the grant in hand, she will now travel to the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon – one of the world’s leading cancer research institutions under the World Health Organization (WHO). There, she will be affiliated with the nutrition and metabolism branch, where she will continue to investigate how diet influences the risk of developing cancer.

Specifically, she will contribute to a project on the impact of dietary and lifestyle factors on the development of the liver disease MASLD. The condition is on the rise globally and has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cancer. The aim of the stay is to produce a scientific article that can contribute to international research in the field.

The travel grant is one of five awarded each year across Aarhus University’s faculties. The purpose is to give talented students the opportunity to go abroad and gain valuable experience in connection with their studies.
