Cardiovascular researcher receives honour for outstanding research
Professor Morten Schmidt from the Department of Clinical Medicine has been awarded the Ingeborg and Leo Dannin Foundation Prize for Scientific Research 2026 in recognition of his significant contribution to cardiovascular research.
Morten Schmidt investigates how health registries can help strengthen the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
According to the professor, Denmark offers unique opportunities in this field, as nationwide registries and the Civil Personal Registration (CPR) number make it possible to link information on disease and treatment and to follow patients over time. This provides a robust foundation for both observational studies and clinical trials.
The aim of his research is to generate new knowledge about risk factors and treatment effects, thereby contributing to improved and safer care for patients with cardiovascular disease.
“It is a great honour to receive this award. I see it first and foremost as a recognition of the many strong collaborations underpinning our research results,” says Morten Schmidt.
The prize amounts to DKK 350,000. Of this, DKK 50,000 is a personal honorary award, while DKK 300,000 will support the further development of the research.
Morten Schmidt qualified in medicine (cand.med.) from Aarhus University in 2012, completed his PhD in 2014 and obtained the higher doctoral degree (dr.med.) in 2022. In 2025, he achieved specialist recognition in cardiology and completed the Danish Health Authority’s expert training programme in thrombosis and haemostasis. The same year, he completed an MSc in Clinical Trials at the University of Oxford with distinction and received the Armitage Award for best dissertation. He has previously received the Jens Christian Skou Award, Health’s research talent award.
