Aarhus professor receives international award for research in functional disorders
Per Fink, a professor and chief physician at the Department of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Functional Disorders at Aarhus University Hospital, has been awarded the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation’s 75th anniversary prize of €50,000 for his extensive work in bringing functional disorders to the international research agenda.
A functional disorder is a condition that leads to various physical symptoms and, if left untreated, can be debilitating. The diagnosis is based on symptom patterns and the course of the illness. Terms like fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME) are also used to describe these conditions.
"It is an enormous recognition and a great honor to receive the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation’s 75th anniversary prize," says Per Fink, adding:
"When I began researching functional disorders over 35 years ago, there was almost no knowledge of these conditions in Denmark. Today, it is a well-established field of research both nationally and internationally, and this award is a clear expression of that."
Per Fink and his research group work on everything from diagnostics and treatment to prevention of functional disorders. Their efforts have built a foundation of knowledge that is crucial for both doctors and patients.
"Developing evidence-based treatments and increasing understanding of functional disorders is not only important for improving patients’ quality of life. It also helps combat the stigma that many of these patients experience. We continue to work to ensure that all doctors have the necessary knowledge to manage these complex diseases," says Per Fink.
